Taste Test Mini-Grants

In the 2022-23 school year, the KY Farm to School Network awarded fifty $1,000 taste test mini-grants for schools, farms, and community partners to conduct taste testing activities of KY-grown fruits and vegetables with KY school students. Awarded projects include:

Besides the requirement of serving KY-grown produce to KY school children, awardees also must connect the students with where their food comes from and the farms that grow it, and collect student feedback about the taste tests.  Besides that, awardees had the freedom to design the project to best fit the needs of their community – and that they did!  It was very exciting to see the variety of project activities that awardees had planned.  This includes activities such as:

  • Farm field trips

  • School farmers market day

  • Creating graphs & charts

  • Video/virtual farm tours

  • Local food cookbooks

  • Farmer guest speakers

  • Students interviewing farmers

  • Recipe cards for students to take home

  • Chef cooking demo

  • Writing opinion pieces

While all of the grantees are a school, farm, or community partner, the roles of the project leaders differs greatly.  Librarian, FRYSC, FFA student, mental health specialist, parents, ag teacher, innovation specialist, farmer – there is widespread interest in connecting KY school children with healthy local food.
